‘The Kashmir Files' Film Nomination For Oscar Awards By Riffat Wani

This movie depicts a one-sided narrative of the dispute of Kashmir between India and Pakistan where one hundred thousand Muslims were killed by Indian security forces. According to Human rights watch and Amnesty International, there are more than thirteen thousand women who were raped and molested, ten thousand men disappeared during custody, ninety-five orphans and more than forty thousand ‘half widows’. The film is a BJP’s ( India’s Hindu ruling party) propaganda, trying to malign Muslims and grabbing hindu vote, ignoring the human rights abuses and the sufferings of the people of Kashmir, especially Muslims.

The film has already promoted hatred against Muslims in India and many killing incidents of hate speech by Hindutva Parliamentarians were reported by media across the world. This film, if awarded will promote Islamophobia across the world and will help in promoting the false and harmful narrative about the deadly dispute that has the potential of nuclear war between two countries.

We believe that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a responsibility to recognize and honour movies that accurately and respectfully depict the reality of people’s lives and histories. “The Kashmir File” does not meet this standard and should not be considered for an Oscar nomination.

We call on the Academy to consider the impact of this movie on the Kashmiri community and to reject its nomination for an Oscar award. We believe in the power of storytelling to shed light on important issues and to promote empathy and understanding. This movie fails to do that and therefore it should not be rewarded.

We also urge you to reach out to the Oscar Academy members and express your concern and opinion. We also urge you to support the filmmakers and content creators who tell stories that truly reflect the complexity and humanity of the world we live in.

By signing this petition, we demand that ‘The Kashmir File’ should not be nominated for Oscar Awards and to acknowledge the real issues of the people and the region.
